Medical Tests for Premature Babies

Most preemies (usually ELBW and VLBW) will have a number of tests in the hospital to rule out or provide early detection of certain common medical problems. Common tests include:

  • Chest X-ray – for breathing and lung problems
  • Abdomen X-ray—for bowel problems
  • ECG and ECHO – for heart problems
  • Head ultrasound – for abnormalities in or around the brain
  • Eye test – for eye problems
  • Hearing test – for hearing and developmental problems
